Our shop stands in the Udatsu Townscape, a nationally designated Important Preservation District for Groups of Traditional Buildings.
Inside this Edo-period building, built in 1760 and featuring traditional “udatsu” firebreak walls, everyone can enjoy a unique Mino Washi craft workshop together – perfect for Japan cultural tours and group excursions.
From solo travelers to groups of up to 45 people at once (roughly one full-size tour bus), everyone can enjoy the workshop together^^

Recently in this newsletter we introduced a group of temple wives who joined us on a training trip.
Afterward, they kindly wrote a training report and beautifully featured their experience at our Mino Washi craft workshop.
The two courses they selected for their hands-on experience were:
・“Washi Korokoro” – creating cute, round roly-poly dolls as Japanese paper souvenirs
・“Paper plate experience” – freely collaging your favorite patterns on a washi-covered plate.
On that day, they first enjoyed a relaxing handmade Mino Washi craft time at Ishikawa Paper Goods’ workshop,
and then moved on to Ogurayama Zenkoji Temple in Mino to listen to a talk by the chief priest.
Combining “time to move your hands and gently unwind your heart” with “time to listen, reflect and calm your mind”
created a truly wonderful cultural training program – our staff still remember seeing them off while feeling very impressed.
To our delight, one of the participants edited a video of the paper plate making process
and shared it online.
You can see how the plain white paper plates gradually transform into “one-and-only works of art”,
and the warm smiles of everyone when their pieces are finished really convey the atmosphere of the experience.

The Hina Doll Stamp Rally and “Kansarashi” winter bleaching of Mino Washi

Winter in Mino City is a season when the crisp cold air and clear skies feel refreshing and beautiful.
The Udatsu Townscape also shows a calmer, more serene side, different from summer and autumn, and is perfect for quiet winter walks during your Japan trip.
What makes the winter townscape suddenly come alive with color is the event hosted by the Mino City Tourism Association:
“Hina Dolls in Udatsu Townhouses” & the Hina Doll Stamp Rally.
Throughout the Udatsu Townscape, traditional townhouses and shops display antique Hina dolls and beautiful Mino Washi Hina dolls indoors and under their eaves, creating a charming festival atmosphere in central Japan.
The stamp rally begins by receiving a stamp sheet (free) at the Tourist Information Center “Banya”.
As you enjoy shopping and dining at participating stores, you collect stamps, and once you have five stamps, you can return to Banya to join a prize drawing. Turn the capsule machine and you may win a fun little prize♪
Of course, the “Mino Washi Craft Experience Shop Ishikawa Paper Goods” is one of the participating stores. Please feel free to drop by to collect a stamp and enjoy our warm Mino hospitality.
Another winter highlight is the sight of “kansarashi”, when kozo, the raw material of Mino Washi, is exposed to the cold river water in mid-winter.
In this “kansarashi” process, bundles of white kozo bark are immersed in the crystal-clear, icy water of the Itadori River, where impurities are washed away over many days and the fibers are naturally bleached by sunlight. It is an essential step in producing high-quality Japanese paper.
In the past, you could see this work in many places along the Itadori River. Today, it has become a winter event passed down as a once-a-year gathering of craftspeople.
Watching artisans standing in near freezing temperatures, carefully handling the kozo in the river, truly feels like witnessing “the winter roots of Mino Washi”.
Paper created from fibers refined by mid-winter water and light has a clear whiteness and soft texture – this is “winter-born Mino Washi”, known as kansarashi washi.
You can tour the Hina dolls displayed in Udatsu townhouses, enjoy walking the streets while collecting stamps,
and, if the timing is right, visit the Itadori River to observe the kansarashi process.

Mino Washi is a cultural treasure of Mino City and has been registered as a UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage.
Founded 123 years ago, Ishikawa Paper Goods hopes people all over the world will discover and enjoy the traditions and beauty of Mino Washi and Japanese culture.
With that wish in mind, we have launched a very special project for visitors from Japan and overseas!
Its name is…
“Did YOU come to Ishikawa Paper Goods for Washi?” Campaign!
Ishikawa Paper Goods is located right in the heart of the historic Udatsu Townscape in Mino City.
Our shop is a designated building within the Important Preservation District for Groups of Traditional Buildings, in a townhouse originally built in 1760 during the Edo period.
This carefully renovated traditional Japanese house now welcomes guests from all over Japan and from around the world on Japan cultural tours.
Inside the shop, we have set up a world map and a map of Japan. We invite all visitors to place a sticker on their place of origin.
As the number of stickers grows, you can see at a glance how far the Mino Washi craft experiences at Ishikawa Paper Goods have spread across Japan and the globe.
Watching the maps fill up with colorful stickers is exciting and fun for both our staff and our guests on Japan trips and group tours.
◆ World Conquest Project ◆
So far, we have welcomed guests (individuals and groups) from 41 different countries.
But there are 193 United Nations member states in the world, so our journey to meet visitors from every country continues.

FC Gifu is a professional soccer club based in Gifu Prefecture, Japan.
Its official mascot character, Giffy, has now been turned into a traditional craft piece – a Washi Korokoro doll made with Mino Washi.

Mayu “Mino” Diary – After the Sukeeemon Autumn Leaves Event

In my previous “Our Town Mino City” entries, I wrote about the Sukeeemon Autumn Leaves event.
I have been helping as a staff member at this local autumn foliage event for three years now.
The event takes place at the riverside in my hometown where I was born and raised – the very riverbank where I went to swim almost every day during summer vacations as a child.
Every local resident has memories connected to this riverbank.
Around the Obon holidays in mid-August, families would spread out large sheets to reserve a spot, welcome relatives back home, and enjoy playing in the river together.
Back when I was in elementary school, there was no pool at school, so mothers would take turns acting as lifeguards so that the children could safely play in the river.
The time spent playing with friends in nature was truly joyful, and I have many memories of going there every day and swimming until I was tanned dark brown.
Today, fewer families return home for summer, and now that the elementary school has a pool, it has become rare to see local children playing in the river.
At the same time, because of the convenient location, more and more visitors from outside the area have come to enjoy the river, and this riverside has gradually become a small sightseeing spot for people traveling in Gifu.
The riverbank is not only a place for playing in the water; it is also a beautiful spot for viewing autumn leaves.
In the past, it also served as a kind of “port” for the region, where handmade washi paper was collected and shipped out.
It is said that Mr. Sukeeemon, who managed this riverbank and was successful in the washi business, was so moved by the maple leaves he saw in Arashiyama, Kyoto, that he brought saplings back and planted them here so that local people could enjoy the same scenery.
We want local people to gather at the riverside again.
We want to share these beautiful autumn leaves with the next generation.
With these wishes, a group of local volunteers started this small community event, Sukeeemon’s Autumn Leaves, which has now been held for 12 years.
From preparation to the main event and finally clean-up –
I could only join each part for a short time,
but while I was out doing sales calls around Mino City for my job, I often saw the autumn leaves event members handing out posters
or gathering for meetings to discuss the details.
Then the long-awaited day finally arrived.
The stage program was packed: taiko drum performances by kindergarten children, brass band performances
