A word from our staff – “Yamashita’s Mountain” column
Thank you as always. This is Yamashita, in charge of the email newsletter at Ishikawa Paper Goods.
Do you like sports? Since I played in the badminton club in junior high school, badminton is my favorite.
Apparently, the Sports Promotion Division of Seki City opens the gym at Wakakusa Plaza twice a month in the evenings, so you can play badminton at night. And it only costs 100 yen to play until 9 pm?
Wow, that’s amazing.
I’ve lived there for 28 years and never knew. Friend A said other people would come too, and I thought, “Sure, with doubles (2-on-2) that’s perfect.” Even if there are people I don’t know, as long as my friend knows them, I figured it would be fine, and probably no one would be ultra-serious about it… so off I went, feeling relaxed.
But when we got there and “opened the lid”…
The acquaintance who had invited my friend was absent that day.
Instead, there were two acquaintances of that acquaintance, my two friends, and me.
There’s nothing quite as awkward as being in a space where no one has a mutual acquaintance.
More than anything, it was soooo awkward!
That was the moment when my inner Yamashita screamed. Honestly, I think everyone there probably felt the same. And what’s more, there were five of us… so one person would always be left out. “Well, if someone acts as referee, I guess that works?” I told myself, and we started playing after only brief introductions.
My outfit of the day: hoodie and pants straight from work. Shoes with no ankle support and no grip. The only thing “prepared for exercise” was my mindset.
I tried my best with one thought in mind: “Don’t fall over.” Still, it felt so good to move my body. Putting on feints, hitting shots far to the back, sending the shuttle softly and then with power – it’s surprising how much your body remembers.
Of course, since I wasn’t wearing proper sports shoes there were times I just couldn’t chase the shuttle down…
I’m writing this the day after, and I’m sore all over. My arms are trembling as I type.
Everyone, please make sure to stretch properly after exercising. I’ve heard that magnesium baths are good for muscle pain. Apparently magnesium is easier to absorb through the skin.
[Notice of Holidays]
December: Closed from the 27th to January 4th for New Year holidays.
We reopen from the 5th.
This year the gap between Christmas and the year-end holidays is short, so it feels especially busy.
There is just one month left in the year. Please take care of yourselves and let’s get through it together.
