What is “Sarubobo”… ↓

Sarubobo is a monkey-shaped doll made in the Hida region of Gifu Prefecture, Japan.

In the Hida dialect, “saru” means monkey and “bobo” means baby; the name comes from its resemblance to a baby monkey.

It is said to have begun as a handmade charm made by mothers for their daughters and grandchildren, wishing for healthy growth, good marriage, safe childbirth, and harmonious relationships.

Today it is widely known as a popular regional souvenir.
