About the Kawagoe Festival… ▼
The Kawagoe Festival (officially “The Float Event of the Kawagoe Hikawa Festival”)
is a traditional and dynamic festival held on the third Saturday and Sunday of October each year in the warehouse-district streets of “Little Edo,” Kawagoe City, Saitama.
Designated an Important Intangible Folk Cultural Property of Japan in 2005, it was added in 2016 to UNESCO’s “Yama, Hoko, Yatai” float festivals list of Intangible Cultural Heritage.
On the floats that appear in the Kawagoe Festival ride karakuri mechanical dolls modeled after figures from history, myth, and legend. One of the floats features Ushiwakamaru (Minamoto no Yoshitsune) as its motif.

A word from the editor — “Yamashita’s Mountain”
Hello, this is Yamashita, your newsletter editor.
Everyone, it’s cold in Mino. The news shows ice forming in puddles, and in Takayama people are already wearing down jackets.
Even I, Yamashita, am writing this newsletter bundled up with a heat patch, a wool cardigan, and leg warmers.
I’m the most cold-sensitive person in the coldest room at home. Even at the new company, I still win the “most cold-sensitive” award.
My metabolism is sluggish and my lack of exercise shows. Because my whole body is stiff, lately I’ve been working hard on squats and stretching.
But I couldn’t keep it up consistently.
So I invented this: doing squats while playing my favorite VR shooting game.
In a shooter, the enemies fire back, of course. While dodging shots, I squat — which must look surreal, but I’m very committed to this “game workout.”
Even just dodging is hard, but now I time the squats, dodge bullets, keep my balance, and take out enemies — multitasking to the extreme. Thanks to that, even in 10 cm heels I’m less likely to stumble; my core is stronger.
I revisited my squat form, my balance improved, and I feel my thick legs have slimmed just a bit. And the most exciting change:
My ankles got flexible!!!
A revolution for me, Yamashita. Since grade school I wondered why “Yamashita can’t squat with heels on the floor.” Right — I’ve been stiff from ankles… no, my whole body, since childhood.
As an adult, I started stretching and finally saw results. Incredible! I can squat with heels down — and without falling on my butt! Which means my muscles are more supple and body-shaping is easier!
I hope to finish my “Mino cosplay” preparations quickly!
