A Note from the Editor — “Yamashita’s Peak”
Thank you as always. This is Yamashita, in charge of our e-newsletter.
The other day I went to the craft fair at Gifu Station. (A craft fair is one of Yamashita’s favorite annual autumn events where handmade goods are showcased—ideal for discovering artisan-made Japanese gifts for retail buyers and B2B wholesale.)
I go every year, but this year the quality was off the charts.
When you visit annually, you naturally get to know many booths. You can tell which items are last year’s leftovers or reprints, which are brand-new, and which shops are exhibiting for the first time.
Because the artists I love release new pieces every year, I often add to what I bought before—though sometimes I’m close to tears when an item I missed last year isn’t offered this year.
Since each piece is handmade, “only one of a kind” is the norm. I choose carefully and buy only the pieces I truly want—unique, once-in-a-lifetime finds perfect for curated Japanese craft assortments.
Ah, it’s wonderful (savoring the moment).
Since changing jobs and starting to set product prices myself, I even find many handmade items “underpriced,” considering the craftsmanship.
I’ve seen TV segments where makers say, “If it’s too expensive, it won’t sell, so we price just at materials cost.”
You can just tell—some pieces take a huge amount of production time.
And for some items, the process isn’t even obvious. Plus, customers who love handmade goods come to buy seriously, but they keep their wallets tight for anything outside their target purchase.
That, in turn, drives creators to elevate techniques and booth displays—competing with better making and better merchandising (great learning for retail buyers and brand developers).
I (Yamashita) happily bought a wood-inlay ear cuff again this year. Wood pieces aren’t cheap, but they have character and warmth.
They’re also light and comfortable. The craftsmanship delivers 100-yen–coin scale wood marquetry precision. I’ll buy again next time—next autumn. If you attend, please share your favorite handmade finds with me. (Ideal inspiration for importing Japanese artisanal accessories.)
