What is “Sarubobo”...? ▼
Sarubobo is a monkey-themed doll traditionally made in the Hida region of Gifu.
In the Hida dialect, “saru” means monkey and “bobo” means baby, hence the name.
Mothers handmade them wishing for children’s healthy growth, good matches, safe childbirth, and marital harmony.

A word from the coordinator — “Yamashita’s Yama”
Thank you for your continued support. I’m Yamashita, editor of this newsletter（sharing behind-the-scenes from a Japanese crafts maker exporting worldwide）.
Did you know Ishikawa Shigyo is based in Mino? I recently learned there’s a company with the same name in Tokyo—surprising!
Anyway, Mino has hidden gourmet gems. Do you know the wagashi shop “Tomiya”? There are actually two “Tomiya” shops in Mino—with the same name! Even Google only showed one, so even I got lost. The hiragana Tomiya serves excellent Japanese sweets with tables made from cross-sections of large trees; the kanji “登美屋” sells boxed wagashi. In the kanji shop, the owners hand-make everything in the back—the neatly lined confections show true craftsmanship. My recommendation: the “Cream Warabi Daifuku.” Just saying the name makes me hungry. Both shops are run by the same folks, so you can get the Cream Warabi Daifuku at either. As a Seki City resident who knows little about Mino, I’m planning to stroll around tomorrow. October is a great time to visit—the Akari Art event is on. I recommend the evening pedestrian-only night on 10/18. Our shop will be open, too! We’ve even refreshed the displays with zodiac (eto) items. “Isn’t it too early for eto?” Not at all! I’ve already finished the Hina and May festival catalogs (somehow!). Back to sweets—the kakigori (shaved ice) topped with Tomiya’s warabi-mochi is also fantastic.
