Have you heard of the film “Exit 8 (8番出口)”? It’s really trending lately.
I hear its poster design won the top prize at the “Prix Luciole” at the 78th Cannes Film Festival in 2025.
It’s based on a game.
The game has no story and no dialogue; the only character is a man in a suit—yet it became a massive hit.
In short, the story is about escaping from a station you’ve wandered into. As you progress, you spot “abnormalities” (differences), and when you find one, you turn back—simple rules.
The film adapts this brilliantly. What moved me most were the set design and camera work—the near-continuous take that keeps flowing.
The careful guidance of the viewer’s gaze to what matters, the relatable opening—anyone looking at their phone while walking could get lost like this. I kept wondering where the cuts were. The clammy ill-will and mounting despair are incredible. And the man’s CG-like gait, expressions, and movement—wow. As expected of a stage actor.
I could say more, but to avoid spoilers I’ll stop here.
If certain depictions might be difficult for you, I recommend checking in advance. If you want the pure experience, watch it in a theater rather than at home—the dark room and good sound make all the difference.
When I shared these thoughts with my predecessor, they said, “You focus on interesting things.” Huh?
