A word from the editor — “Yamashita’s Yama” corner
Thank you for reading. I’m Yamashita, your newsletter editor.
Today I’d like to talk about “that thing” I sometimes see. Do any of you see it too?
In my family, my father is especially good at spotting “it.” Maybe it’s genetic. I, Yamashita, sometimes catch its scent or glimpse it out of the corner of my eye. In summer, it appears even more often. Even with my eyes closed, if it passes by, I think, “Ah, it’s here.” It’s scary when it shows up randomly when I’m not expecting it. I wish it would come when called.
Maybe it’s because Obon is near. Sometimes it even “arrives early.” The other day, I saw it ambling into the dark washroom and the empty kitchen. When our eyes met, the white-furred back seemed to realize it had been seen and fled. Just like people who run when they know they’re in the wrong. Honestly, I get spooked too when our eyes meet in the dark. Especially on mornings when its spot hasn’t changed. “So you’re still there,” I think.
We keep a dog blanket in the living room all year. Lift it and there it is, or sometimes “it” snuggles right next to a sleeping human… Don’t worry, everyone.
This was a dog story from start to finish.
Dogs are so irresistibly cute it’s a problem. Our pups are shy and fickle, so they only come when they feel like it.
Did I cool you down by making you think it was a ghost? It’s summer, so I slipped in a little ghost story. I’m bad with horror movies, but ghost tales always pique my curiosity. I get excited when my dad cheerfully says, “It was at the office today too and stayed late with me.” Today’s story is 100% nonfiction.
By the way, my current dog is black. Heh heh.
