About the Kawagoe Festival ▼
The Kawagoe Festival (formally “Kawagoe Hikawa Festival Float Event”)
is a traditional, dynamic festival held on the third Saturday and Sunday of October each year amid the Kurazukuri storehouse streets of Koedo (Little Edo), Kawagoe City, Saitama.
It was designated an Important Intangible Folk Cultural Property of Japan in 2005, and in 2016 it was registered as part of UNESCO’s Intangible Cultural Heritage “Yama, Hoko, Yatai” float events.
The floats at the Kawagoe Festival carry karakuri mechanical dolls depicting figures from history, myth, and legend. One of the floats features “Ushiwakamaru” (the young Minamoto no Yoshitsune) as its motif.
