A word from the editor: “Yamashita’s Mountain”
Thank you as always—this is Yamashita, the newsletter editor.
Do you know Washi Korokoro? It’s one of our products—handmade Japanese Mino Washi roly-poly dolls. I’m currently developing new product designs based on ideas created by our predecessors. Right now, I’m struggling a bit. I’m making three summer animals: a penguin, a polar bear, and a whale shark. The penguin and polar bear came together quickly, but I just can’t create a whale shark design I’m satisfied with… Doesn’t it feel too “flat” as an image? Washi Korokoro needs to be round like an egg so it can wobble and stand back up… hmm, what should I do? So I submitted a draft to our artisans. From the next room I can hear “this, that, maybe…” We have hundreds of die-cut parts, but as a junior staff member I still don’t fully know them all. The artisans combined parts skillfully and finished it in no time—true professionals. I’d heard that applying yuzen washi can be difficult, but the result turned out surprisingly “wow—this looks great!”
I want it ready by Golden Week. It’ll be limited quantity for summer—will everyone buy it? I’m nervous. Depending on this summer’s trend, I’d also like to create a winter Washi Korokoro lineup. Goal: bring back the Washi Korokoro Santa!
