Our Town, Mino City! Winter-Only Highlights
The Hina Doll Stamp Rally & Mino Washi “Kansarashi” (Cold-Water Bleaching)
━…━…━…━…━…━…━…━…━…━…━
Winter in Mino City is a refreshing season, with crisp air and beautifully clear skies.
The Udatsu Rising Townscape also shows a calmer, more serene expression—different from summer and autumn.
What instantly brings this winter townscape to life is an event hosted by the Mino City Tourism Association:
“Hina Dolls in the Udatsu Townhouses” & the Hina Doll Stamp Rally.
Centered around the Udatsu Rising Townscape, vintage Hina dolls and Mino Washi Hina dolls are displayed in rows inside townhouses, shops, and under the eaves.
The stamp rally starts by picking up a stamp sheet at the tourist information center “Banya” (free).
Collect stamps while shopping or dining at participating stores; once you’ve collected five, return to Banya to join a lottery. Spin the capsule and you might win a fun prize—so exciting♪
Of course, “Ishikawa Mino Washi Paper Goods Workshop — Ishikawa Paper Goods Ltd.” is also one of the participating locations. Please stop by and get your stamp!
And another winter highlight is the scene of “Kansarashi,” where kozo (paper mulberry)—the raw material for Mino Washi—is soaked in a midwinter river.
This “Kansarashi” landscape is truly iconic.
In the crystal-clear cold water of the Itadori River, artisans soak the white bark of kozo and, over many days, remove impurities while naturally bleaching it under the sun. It’s an essential process for producing high-quality washi.
This work used to be seen all along the Itadori River, but today it has been passed down as an annual winter tradition where artisans gather once a year.
Watching artisans step into the river in near-freezing temperatures and handle kozo with care is truly the “origin of winter Mino Washi.”
Paper born from fibers refined by midwinter water and light has a clean, bright whiteness and a gentle texture—often described as “winter-born Mino Washi = Kansarashi.”
Stroll through the udatsu townhouses to see Hina dolls, enjoy walking around town with the stamp rally,
and if the timing is right, visit the Itadori River to observe Kansarashi.
After that, please also stop by “Ishikawa Mino Washi Paper Goods Workshop — Ishikawa Paper Goods Ltd.”
In our shop, you’ll find Mino Washi Hina doll crafts, washi accessories that suit winter interiors,
and even a hands-on Washi Korokoro Hina doll workshop experience.
If you tell us, “I read the newsletter before coming!” when you visit,
I might end up talking a little too much about how wonderful winter in Mino is(笑)
The quiet of winter, and the elegance of Hina dolls.
And the story of the “winter river” that gives birth to Mino Washi.
We would be delighted if you could come and savor Mino City—special in winter—at a relaxed pace.

Mayumi “Mino” Diary: Which Mochi Seasoning Do You Like?
━…━…━…━…━…━…━…━…━
Even after New Year’s is over,
for some reason, we still keep craving “mochi.”
Starting this year—going against the times—I decided to use a kerosene heater, so I’ve been enjoying slowly grilling mochi on top of it.
The classic is, of course,
soy sauce + sugar + nori seaweed.
Simple, but it’s the most comforting.
When I want something a little sweet,
I mix kinako or black sesame with sugar.
With extra sugar, it tastes so soothing.
When I get tired of grilled mochi, next up is ozoni soup!
In the Mino City area, we simmer mochi and New Year’s greens (komatsuna) seasoned with bonito flakes and soy sauce.
It’s the taste I grew up with.
If there’s still some left, I soften the mochi in the microwave and cut it into small pieces.
After spreading it across a plate, I microwave it longer to make it crispy,
then use it as a pizza topping♪
Even with the same mochi, just changing the seasoning
lets you enjoy so many different flavors—so nice, isn’t it?
If you have a recommended way to eat mochi,
please tell me!
