A quick note from our staff — “Yama from Yamashita”

Hello! This is Yamashita, editor of our email newsletter.

It’s autumn now — the perfect season for wearing kimono. I put one on the other day, of course.
But I’m not great at adjusting the collar and clearly need more practice. My setup: a collar stiffener and a “calling belt.” Yet maybe because I lost some weight, everything felt loose. I threw on a haori coat to disguise it and headed to the Kimono Fair.
Impression: even better than last year. Wait, aren’t there more choices for obi, kimono, and accessories? I promised myself “no splurging” today…
Next thing I know, I’m holding a kimono and a haori I bought on instinct. Red and black, punk-ish and cool — they even look great together. How did this happen?

I was supposed to find something to match a soft, fluffy, feminine obi. Pastels are hard! Maybe it’s because I’m currently into bold, deeper makeup. Yep. Let’s say that’s why.

Since they were secondhand, I spent ¥1,000 on the kimono — then ¥2,000 on the parfait afterward. Huh, the parfait cost more! Still, the combination of kimono and parfait made for an incredibly happy moment.

It felt like a tea party… even though I don’t drink black tea.

So please, everyone,
be careful with a shop called “Okuma Parlor.”

Their seasonal, fruit-laden desserts and whole-melon specials (priced to barely break even!) are amazing — and their secretly sold dried fruits are dangerously delicious. It’s easy to overdo it.
Seriously, take care. Our home stash is running low, so I’m tempted to sprint over and restock. My personal recommendation is the kiwi — bursting with seedy texture. Don’t tell anyone!
