Our Hometown, Mino City! Autumn Colors at “Suke-emon’s Maples”
━…━…━…━…━…━…━…━…━…━…━
The “Suke-emon’s Maples” in the Nagase district of Mino City have entered their beautiful autumn foliage season again this year.
These maple trees along the Itadori River are said to have begun when paper wholesaler Takei Suke-emon brought back saplings from Arashiyama in Kyoto during the Meiji era and planted them here.
For roughly 150 years since, they’ve been lovingly protected by local residents and have become one of Mino’s signature autumn views in Gifu, Japan — a favorite for fall foliage viewing on Japan trips.
About 30 maple trees planted along the river reflect on the water’s surface. By day you can enjoy the contrast of clear autumn skies and crimson leaves; by night you’ll see a magical illuminated landscape.
This year’s light-up period runs from Saturday, November 15 to Sunday, November 30.
Lights are on from 5:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m.
There will also be an event on Saturday, November 15 in the afternoon.
Please come see the maples, whose beauty changes from day to night.
Access: about 20 minutes by car from the Mino I.C. (Tokai-Hokuriku Expressway).
Free parking is provided, making it convenient for sightseeing by car, coach tours, and travel agency itineraries.
After enjoying the autumn leaves, be sure to stop by
the “Mino Washi Paper Craft Experience Shop — Ishikawa Paper Goods,” located in the heart of the Udatsu Historic District.
We’ve stocked handmade Mino-washi accessories and seasonal Zodiac (Eto) ornaments, including new autumn–winter items.

Mayu “Mino” Diary — Morning leaf-raking and a little parent–child drama
━…━…━…━…━…━…━…━…━
My cleaning duty at work is the building exterior.
After the hot summer, the weather has finally cooled, and outdoor cleaning has become much easier.
Lately I’ve been wrestling every morning with fallen leaves from the crape myrtle.
Filling a dustpan to the brim has become my daily morning routine.
During that cleaning time, I often see a neighborhood girl and her mother heading to preschool.
On days when she keeps getting distracted, her mom gently coaxes her along,
and on days she doesn’t feel like walking, she chirps “Piggyback! Piggyback!” and off they go with a ride on mom’s back.
This morning I heard, “You said the A-I-U-E-O! Well done!” — her mother praising her with delight.
It reminded me how at that age, simply reciting the syllabary earned big praise…
A kind, attentive mom and a daughter with a bright, innocent smile —
seeing them has become one of my small morning joys. ^^
